Pascal Fletcher spent more than 10 years in Cuba as a Havana-based correspondent for Reuters and the Financial Times. During his time there, from 1989 to 1993 and then from 1994 to 2001, he reported on Cuba's reaction to the collapse of its major ally and supplier the Soviet Union, the island's 'Special Period' economic and social crisis, and its cautious initial opening to foreign investment and tourism under then President Fidel Castro.

Previously, from 1987-1989, he had served as Reuters correspondent in southern Africa, which included reporting on the landmark battle between Cuban troops and South African forces at Cuito Cuanavale in Angola, and on the peace talks that led to a Cuban/South African military withdrawal from Angola and Namibian independence. From 2009 to 2011, he was Reuters bureau chief in Miami where he followed US-Cuba developments closely, and has continued to do so since then.
