Armando Portela
"Ph.D in Gegraphy. Geographer and cartographer"

(Havana, 1951), Geographer and cartographer. Worked for 23 years with the Institute of Geography (currently Institute of Tropical Geography)  of the former Cuban Academy of Sciences.

He holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the Institute of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (Moscow, 1989), where he developed a original thesis on structural geomorphology and remote sensing applied to tropical Cuba.

Portela is coauthored the section of Geomorpholgy (Relief) of the Atlas Nacional de Cuba (Havana, 1989) and produced a number of geomorphologic maps of the island.

Since 1993 Portela lives and works in Miami. Since 2000 works with Miami Herald Media Co and regularly freelances on geographical issues of the island. Hundreds of his articles, maps and charts include the environment, natural resources, the infrastructure, population, agriculture, markets and other geographical issues.
